Countless women could only dream of hitting a jackpot that would send their cheating husband's mistresses to the poor house. One lucky woman did strike it rich, because of the "severe emotional distress" she suffered, as the result of her two-timing husband's neglect. Last week, a Greensboro, N.C., court ordered a mistress to fork over a total of $9 million dollars, $5 million in compensatory damages and $4 million in punitive damages, to her lover's humiliated spouse.
Cynthia Shackelford, 60, sued her husband's mistress Anne Lundquist, 49, back in 2007, because the jilted wife claims the "other woman" destroyed her 33-year marriage to Allan, her husband.
Lundquist was charged with "alienation of affections," or interfering in a marriage. The ruling was made in one of the few U.S. states that allows such a charge to be brought up against a home wrecker.
Since all involved parties live in North Carolina, the state remains as one of 7 (the others are Hawaii, Illinois, Mississippi, New Mexico, North Carolina, South Dakota and Utah) that allows a person to sue the party that is alleged to have interfered in a marriage, which is the "alienation of affections" law. More than 200 such cases are filed statewide in an average year, according to the legal publication the ABA Journal.
According to court documents, Cynthia said her husband began an affair with Lundquist before she separated from him in April 2005. The spurned wife says that she and her husband were still in love when Lundquist severed their union. "I had not a clue that Allan would wander," Shackelford told a local newspaper. "He kept telling me, 'Oh, she's just a friend. There's no affair. I love you.'"
Cynthia stated that she gave up teaching to support her husband's career and raise the couple's two children. When the couple parted, she says they had to move in with friends in order to keep from being homeless. Allan was mandated by the courts to pay spousal support, but allegedly never did. The roving spouse faces arrest on a contempt-of-court charge for violating that support order.
Although Cynthia might not get the exact amount awarded to her, she is satisfied that the case has received tons of exposure and that it serves as a kind of warning for those folks who prey on married people: "We would like for people to respect the sanctity of marriage," Cynthia said. "We wanted a number high enough that it would keep other people from ... going after other married spouses."

This is the stupidest BS I've ever heard! Why should the "other woman" have to pay the wife? It's not her fault her "goodies" are better. And how come the man is never to blame? He's the one who broke his vows!

>>> do you really think the spouse that breaks the wedding vows should be considered the guilty one, and should be the one punished? I really don't think you want that. It would put many wives in jeopardy. This is America not an Islamic country. But this does open the door for husbands to do the same. Get those P.I.s working guys.........

why do you have to get all defendsive? are you one of the mistresses? the husband already paid the price. His marriage fell apart. do you really think that the money would make her whole again? Marriage is priceless! This is a lesson for those mistresses out there. 'cuz usually, the mistresses never had to pay the price for anything they've done to others. so this is just a tiny bit of price they have to pay compared to their marriage and their kids!

To Pup_z----
Why should the mistriss have to pay the price for the husband's infidelity and lies? He probably lied to her, told her his marriage was over and that he loved her---and she probably believed him. I find it hard to believe she would just seek out a married man to destroy his marriage...she was probably misled and lied to! I have seen this happen to friends of mine---the man just lies to them.

It's stuff like this that perpetuates the ignorance connected to the wife fighting the mistress when it should be the husband she should be going for. HE wandered, HE lied to her to her face, so the responsibility is on him. This is ridiculous; the mistress has to come out of pocket while the husband is just held in contempt for not showing up....only allows him to cheat, lie and wander more (3 verbs she used). It's not the other woman's fault why she had to move in with friends because she gave up her job to support her husband. it is the law though, so.

And what makes you think that the mistress was some zombied "blow up doll" that had no control over herself??? True, she should go after the husband, but why should the mistress be off the hook scott free so she can go and do some more house wrecking?? I was a victim of adultery (my WIFE cheated on me and the person whom she was cheating knew, because the ignorant little f*cker told me while I was fighting for a** in Iraq!) in North Carolina and was in the process of hemming her and his ass up for this same charge, but they got away to a state that doesn't recognize this law (TX). My point is, whether the mistress knew or not, BOTH her and the husband cheated. So both must pay. And you can't take the mistress' word because she already broke the wife's trust by cheating with her man, so she can't take her word for nothing!

I smell a class action lawsuit against Beyonce for 3.5 minutes of "alienated affection" of millions of men every time she's on the air.

LOL.... Wow dat shyt is RAW...but it does go to showya. If you are in a Bad or fucc'd up marraige GET DA HELL OUT In A Hurry...Wives have legal rights. I do believe that this "The Other Women" can appeal this, becuz its not right. It was the Husband who went outside of the marriage simply because she was a "Mistress" doesnt mean she owes the wife a damm dime... Who knows why dis guy was having an affair the wife MIGHT HAVE BEEN A Total AZZHOLE.... But a man cant sue a wife for being an azzhole and get PAID, so this ruling is BOGUS. Period.

I agree that it was the husband who cheated, but I'm sick and tired of the HOES who purposely go after married men. He ultimately ruined his own marriage, but there are such things as preying jezebel homewreckers and they better learn their places. The hoe in this story is reaping what she sowed and I hope that sorry husband of hers ends up in jail so he can think about the bull doo-doo he brought on his family.
Hahahahaa to the husband and his hoe.
